This was a great trip to the Heron Rookery located in Highland, Indiana. It started off with being greeted by a Buck unexpectedly in the morning fog, and ended with freezing hands and some wonderful Heron and Egret encounters.
This is a small local park to me just off the Little Calumet River. I met a man hear a few weeks ago that explained to me years ago it was actually a forest area and the Army Corps of Engineers had created this wetland off the Little Calumet. There is a nice walkway that goes around the entire wetland that people can enjoy the wildlife from.
I personally like to go down into the wetland a little ways and situate myself right a water level with the birds. You can’t go very far….as well…it’s a wetland and you’ll start to sink. This was a particularly cold day and there was a thick fog hovering just above the water.
When I first arrived there was fog in the valley where the high tension power lines come through the area. As I was walking to the water I noticed a large Buck come walking across the way. He did not see me so I crouched down and struggled to get a photo or video as I had not been prepared; it was a wonderful start to the trip though!
This fellow came up to me less than 50′ away and stayed around for sometime. If it wasn’t for the wet and cold I would have stayed much longer.
